Couples Therapy FAQs: What to Know Before Getting Started

  • Couples counselling is a form of therapy where partners meet with a trained relationship therapist to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen emotional intimacy. It’s not about who’s right or wrong, it’s about learning to understand and support each other better.

  • Couples often start therapy when they notice recurring arguments, emotional distance, or difficulty working through differences. It can also be helpful preventatively β€” before major life changes like marriage, children, or retirement β€” to build healthy communication habits early.

  • Most couples attend sessions together, but individual sessions can sometimes be included when helpful. Your therapist will discuss what makes the most sense for your goals.

  • Yes. Online couples therapy offers flexibility and accessibility while maintaining the same quality of connection as in-person sessions. It’s especially useful for partners living in different cities or managing busy schedules.

  • Many Thrive counsellors use Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Gottman Method techniques, and attachment-based approaches β€” all evidence-based methods shown to help couples rebuild closeness and trust.

  • Every couple is unique. Some benefit from short-term therapy (around 6–8 sessions) focused on communication tools, while others prefer ongoing support as they navigate deeper or longer-term issues.

  • Not at all. We work with all types of relationships, married, dating, engaged, LGBTQIA+, co-parenting, and polyamorous couples, at any stage.

  • That’s common. You can still reach out and start the conversation. Sometimes one partner begins individually, and the other joins when ready. Your therapist can help make that transition feel comfortable for both of you.
