Setting Goals and being Successful in 2018!

Many people make new years resolutions and consider goals this time of the year- is this something that is helpful? I like to consider each new year as a time to further explore our focus and see what we can add to what we are currently doing and not subtracting, for example: practice more self-care and or mindfulness and not: No sugar or No smoking -starting on a specific day. I do think that goals around health and self-improvement are very important, but what I am referring to in this post is starting to shift the ideas around absolutes as well as being hard on ourselves.

It is my personal belief that once we can start to be kinder to ourselves and increase what we can consider more healthy and helpful activities, then the behaviours that we wish to decrease or "quit" will gradually do so- down to a manageable point that we can further break them down and thus have increased success. By having the language, "I would like to do less of [something]" as opposed to "I will not do this [behaviour] or eat this [perceived unhealthy item] increases us feeling more positive towards ourselves because we are setting up an attainable goal, something more manageable that will foster success.

In many groups that I facilitate and in the private work that I do I share with people the key to creating and attaining goals. I do provide some in-between session email and or phone coaching should this be helpful to you- many share that this is very helpful. The key to attaining your goals is to look at your problems and choose one that is solvable. All of us have problems- all of us. Before we come up with goals, we need to examine the list of items that we want to consider. This means writing everything down- brainstorming as it is often referred to.

Once you have listed everything, then we need to consider what is solvable versus what is unsolvable. Some things are solvable- paying a long overdue bill, or increasing our health and wellness in some way.  Some health conditions are not solvable. We can work around managing the symptoms or conditions, perhaps reducing the stress related to the health concern -but we cannot completely solve certain health issues.

Setting and achieving our goals in 2018 is about setting attainable and realistic goals and being accountable for them. I can help you to design your goals in a way that you will have success and increase your self-esteem and overall health.
