How do I know when it is time to try medication?

Everyone has their own level of comfort with trying medication for mental health issues.

We know that for mild to moderate depression and anxiety, professional support like counselling is at least as effective as medication. For moderate to severe levels of mood struggles, the most effective treatment might be a combination of medication and professional support.

However, it is still a very personal choice.

Be aware that choosing medication as a first step can get in the way of learning tools and strategies to manage and understand your mental health and wellness.

A treatment plan that includes taking medication will have a trial period that involves working with your doctor, and adjusting the dosage according to its effectiveness and the side effects you might be experiencing. So you will need to be open to seeing out the process to ultimately know what the impact is once your body has adjusted. Going on and off medications at your own discretion can cause more problems and side effects to deal with.

Here are some ideas about how to find a threshold that works for you. It might be time to try medication when:

1.     Your doctor or psychiatrist advises you to

2.     You have a therapist that is suggesting you need to talk to your doctor or a psychiatrist about medication

3.     You are really struggling with your mood and don’t have access to professional support like counselling

4.     You’ve tried self-help resources and professional support for at least 6-8 weeks and are not seeing any improvement in mood and or function

Medications for mental health should always be taken under the care and regular supervision of a trusted doctor or psychiatrist. Work closely with your doctor and mental health professionals for the best results!
