Fire Cupping FAQs

  • Fire cupping is a traditional technique rooted in Chinese Medicine that uses gentle heat to create suction in specialized cups placed on the skin. This suction helps increase circulation, release muscle tension, and promote deep relaxation.

  • Fire cupping should not be painful. Most people describe the sensation as warm, soothing, and similar to a deep tissue massage. You may feel pressure or tightness where the cups are placed, but treatments are adjusted to your comfort level.

  • Fire cupping is commonly used to support muscle tension, back and neck pain, headaches, stress, poor circulation, and physical fatigue. It can be especially helpful for people who carry stress in their shoulders or spend long hours sitting or working at a desk.

  • Temporary circular marks are common after fire cupping. These are not bruises and usually fade within a few days to a week, depending on your body and circulation. Your practitioner will explain what to expect before treatment.

  • Fire cupping is a therapy within Traditional Chinese Medicine and is often used alongside acupuncture, but it can also be offered on its own. Your registered acupuncturist will determine whether fire cupping, acupuncture, or a combination of both is best for your needs.
